Philyaw's Story

Dino Philyaw, The Pit Master and Owner of Philyaw's Cookout, was born and raised in the countryside of North Carolina. When he wasn't in school and playing sports, he spent much of his time watching his father and uncles slow smoke whole hogs for family gatherings. This is where his passion for "The Pit" began, although it wouldn't become the forefront of life until after a few small side adventures.

In 1990 Dino was drafted to Major League Baseball Amature Draft by the Cleveland Indians. After 2 seasons of baseball his love for the game of football took over. He spent the next four years as a running back playing college football, the highlight of his college career being a 1995 Pack 10 Championship at the University of Oregon and a chance to play in the Rose Bowl. At this time he also ran track for the U of O, finishing 2nd in the 100 Meter Dash in the Pac 10 Championship. In 1995 Dino was drafted to the National Football League by the New England Patriots. He would spend a total of 4 years playing in the NFL, 2 years for the Carolina Panthers and 2 years with the New Orleans Saints.

Deciding to make Eugene, Oregon his home Dino returned to Oregon to live full time. He spent time in orthopedic sales and has also owned a construction company. He married his wife Angela, a native of Eugene, in 2005. They have 5 children: Antonio, Ava, Mia, Kiara, and Devon.

After years spent cooking for tailgate parties and other family-friendly events, Dino and Angela decided to make The Cookout a business that they could share with everyone. In 2008 Philyaw's Cookout became an official BBQ business. We specialize in catering for weddings, tailgate parties, company picnics, and any other special event—big or small.
